Essential Kitchen Supplies For Your First Apartment Posted By : Jim Brown
Moving out of your dormitory room or out of your parents' home into your first apartment is an exciting experience and one that can end up causing you a lot of frustration as you try to furnish the rooms with everything you need to provide for your basic needs. Essentially, your kitchen needs can be grouped in four broad areas: cookware, utensils, preparation tools, and bake ware.
* Cookware for your first apartment will help you to actually cook the foods on the stove top. You should look for a minimum of six items for your first cookware pieces, each one with a tight fitting lid for best results in cooking or sauteing. These cookware items include a large 8 quart stock pot for cooking pasta or soups and stews; an 8 inch fry pan and a 10 inch fry pan for cooking fried foods; a 10 inch saute pan for preliminary cooking steps and two saucepans in a 3 quart and 1.5 quart size.
* Preparation of food requires additional kitchen supplies. Prep work needs items such as mixing bowls in various sizes, measuring cups, casserole dishes and various sizes and shapes for storage of your foods. Stainless steel is great for measuring cups as they will hold up longer and never break or chip. Good storage containers help to prevent loss of foods due to insect infestation, freezer burn or wilting. You can find storage containers that double as microwavable containers so you can go from the freezer to the dining room table without having extra dishes to wash.
* The utensils you choose are the tools that help you mix, cut, stir, and serve up the foods that you are preparing. A basic set of utensils should include tongs, a spatula, slotted spoons, a cutting board, a rolling pin and a good quality knife set. You should be willing to pay a little more if needed in order to purchase a knife set that will hold up to hard use for many years. Good knives hold their edge longer and make preparation of foods requiring slicing mincing or cutting easier.
* The final category of essential kitchen supplies is bake ware. You may not plan on doing any extensive baking, but you should at least have a cookie sheet and a muffin pan for containing baked goods. A cookie sheet can also hold French fries, pizza, chicken nuggets and fish sticks.
Unless you plan to eat out all the time, or stick with a microwave to prepare your meals, you will need to acquire the basic supplies as identified above. Some of the best places to buy kitchen tools and pans is at a mass merchandiser and they are always close to where you live. You can have the fun of trying out some new recipes or preparing some favorites just like Mom used to make. Acquiring all these items can be fairly expensive, so you may want to plan ahead before your move and begin acquiring needed items. Ask for a covered casserole dish for a birthday present, or purchase less expensive items until you can afford to purchase a better quality version.
